Cleaning Your Hunter Douglas Shades

Advantage Blinds • 18 November 2025

Why do homeowners avoid cleaning their window shades? For some, it seems like a labor-intensive task, but others simply forget or fear damaging them. Busy schedules also push window treatment care to the bottom of household priorities. Unlike floors or countertops that immediately show dirt, window shades gradually accumulate dust and grime, making the buildup less noticeable. Then, all of a sudden, it’s pretty significant.

At Advantage Blinds, our expert team advises clients that Hunter Douglas shades aren’t maintenance-free, but cleaning them is straightforward. Once you learn and use the proper techniques, your window shades will thank you with years of service.

Now let’s get cleaning!

Why Cleaning Window Shades Regularly is Essential

Dust, allergens, and pollutants accumulate on fabric surfaces over time, potentially harming your indoor air quality and triggering allergies in sensitive family members. Pet dander and cooking odors can also permeate the fabrics. Besides that, you might notice that the shades have lost their new appearance as the layers of dust make fabrics appear dull in color.

Cleaning your Hunter Douglas shades extends the life of your investment. It also prevents permanent staining, fabric deterioration, and mechanical challenges that might affect operation.

Clean shades also perform better because dust buildup can interfere with light filtering and insulation capabilities.

How to Clean Hunter Douglas Shades

Fortunately, Hunter Douglas cellular shades and all the other styles give home and business owners wear-resistant performance since many of the fabrics are specially treated to resist dirt.

Here are a couple of tips for cleaning your Hunter Douglas shades:

Dusting Your Window Shades

Lightly dust your shades about once a month with a feather duster or microfiber cloth, but avoid using a dusting mitt on light-dimming fabrics. You may use the brush attachment on your vacuum with a vertical stroke for deeper cleaning on some window treatments.

Avoid using the brush attachment on Hunter Douglas shades, including Luminette® Sheer Panels and Vignette® Roman Shades. Instead, use a hairdryer on the non-heat setting or a can of compressed air to dust those off, standing about 6 to 8 inches back from the treatments.

Spot-Cleaning Your Window Shades

Using a sponge or soft cloth dampened with lukewarm water, spot clean your shades carefully, being certain not to press hard or rub a stain into the fabric. If the water doesn’t work, add a drop of mild cleaning soap to a bucket of lukewarm water and mix well. Then, blot the fabric gently—never rub it, as this can cause damage.

Here are a few Hunter Douglas shades to avoid spot cleaning:

  • Pirouette® Sheer Shades.
  • Silhouette® Sheer Shades.
  • Sonnette® Roller Shades.

Use cool, distilled water when spot cleaning fabric-covered headrails on styles like the following:

  • Silhouette® Sheer Shades.
  • Vignette® Roman Shades.

If you’re unsure, refer to the cleaning instructions that came with your Hunter Douglas shades. And of course, our team is always happy to answer your questions.
